Catching up

I kinda remembered I have this blog! Mostly I've been posting the new stuff over on the Crashland Studio page. As great as it is there, There's sometimes multiple posts daily, so it can be hard to follow a continuing story like this one. So here I'll mostly post the newest pages, with some behind-the-scenes stuff occasionally. If you just want to read the story, look in the archives for the page numbers, oldest is 1st.

#3, page 4

Page 4 here of Children of Light 3. This one took maybe the least time, but was kinda hard emotionally. When I write, I try to dig inside myself to find parts of myself to put into the characters, and poor Scott here has a lot of my pain and hurts. I also made a censored version where I cleaned up a few words. I didn’t use language to be shocking or gratuitous; it seemed most appropriate for the character and what he’s going through. At the darkest times of our lives, we hardly care to censor ourselves. I may have gotten too into the character during this page, I started to share some of his feelings! But I remembered the voice of the Lord, who promises renewed life, just as he offers Scott. No matter the past, long ago, or recent, God can make all things new!

This took about 8-10 hours total. Used sharpie, brush pen, gray tone marker, and sponge with ink. I enjoyed a Great Lakes Elliot Ness beverage during the inking.

Comic show!

I had a table at a local comic show today, went pretty good! Talked to some nice people, sold a few books and sketches, enough for me to get a few things at the show, and a few groceries on the way home even.

I did a sketchbook drawing of Iron Man for a little girl, I hope it didn't make her cry. I don't do good under pressure! I also did some sketch cards below. I did a better version of the Wonder Woman, and a Wolverine that got bought. I gave an Iron Man to a 5-year-old boy who was with a fellow vendor. He said it was him in his Iron Man suit. Good enough!

Got to meet and talk to Eric Adams who does Lackluster World. I was pretty impressed, and laughed out loud reading it there. I finished #1 at the show and had to get #2. It's not for easily offended religious types (language, indecent acts with a clown, extreme fundamentalism).

Sketches of upcoming art by Dan Barlow! Can't wait!

page 3

Hey, that wasn't too bad! 2 weeks, right? I know it'll take longer to get the next one, so hang in there!

Also, you didn't miss page 2. 1 was actually page 1 and 2 of print, so It's easier for me to keep with that numbering.

Used ink brush for the characters, ink wash for shades & backgrounds. I tried a paper towel dipped in white and black ink for the bg's.

New style for the lettering. Let me know how you like it.

Children of Light 3 page 1

Here it is! Pages of Children of Light #3 will be published here as they're completed. Something cool I'll be doing again is inviting other artists to join the fun, so soon we'll be seeing some good stuff! Page 2 will be done in hopefully a week or so, no more than 2. Ok, 3 at the most. I'll try for 1.

I only sketched this one out before inking. Used a lot of different things here: brush marker, brush & ink, sharpie, light ink wash, digital touch up with Gimp.

marker test

I found these markers someone gave me a few years ago, and never used, made by Eberhard Faber. I pulled out the gray tones selection after buying 1 at the art store the other day, and gave em a spin. I like the way they blend, you almost can't tell it's marker. I drew a sketchy face at top, and the blob at the bottom wasn't meant to look like a beard, but there it is.

Did some diving last night, been missing the free stuff! Grabbed all these things that looked like pulled bbq pork, turned out to be soy meat or something. I might eat crap if it's covered with barbecue sauce, so it should be good.

Also excited to try out a new bakery outlet store, our old one closed. This one's a little further away, but easily accessable. When i first drove up, some guys were coming out of the back of the neighboring store to leave, so I waited then drove around the block. When I came back, there was 1 car still there. I didn't know if someone else was about to come out, so I just peeked in and grabbed some hoagie buns off the top.

Fake meat bbq sandwiches! mmmmm...

getting there

This is page 2. just about ready to tone with ink stuff. Thought I'd do 2 pages at once, since once I get in the groove of ink toning, it's best to keep going. Hopefully will debut by next week or something.

Ready...set...

Hey blogsters! Long time! My bad. Been letting a lot of stuff get in the way of my getting work done. Sorry, it was a bad year. One thing I have been doing is lettering for issue #4 of Mark Melton's Angledreams. Good stuff. I never read it until I started work on it. Sorry Mark!

So about a year after I finished Children of Light #2, I finally get #3 rolling. Really. Check this out:

Monster attack. Rarrr!

This page is almost in the can. It will be page 1 & 2, and 3 is in inks too. What I thought I'd do is post finished pages here, so you can read them as I finish. Hopefully 1 every week or 2. I can't promise speed, sorry. It's the way things is. Not yet sure if I'll be opening up to other artists to help out. Possibly. There is 1 page already done by someone else, so I might as well. I liked the way they turned out. You'd probably like it too, so we can move along quicker!

Almost there

Been re-lettering and while I'm at it, re-writing parts of Children of Light #1. Since I had #2 done, I took a look back at #1 and was almost horrified at the difference in the books. #1 I hand-lettered, and was pretty bad at it. I'm not a digital lettering whiz, but I think I'm getting good at it quick. See the difference in these 2 pages.

After:

I've got a few more to go. It's taking a lot longer than it should, making myself work has been a struggle lately. Re-writing as I go makes it take longer, too. Hopefully be done and ready to print in a week or 2.
